Sign the Stem Cell Charter NOW (and pass the word)

By Mitchell Beer | November 14, 2009

Several years ago we began covering conference sessions that showcased the incredible promise of stem cells to cure a large cluster of debilitating or deadly diseases.
Ever since, I’ve kept an eye out for opportunities to learn more about a research area that has become needlessly controversial, and has yet to receive the critical mass of funding and public support that would help it move into the mainstream.
That moment of critical mass has finally arrived. In the next five minutes, you can help.
Earlier this year, the Canadian Stem Cell Foundation (CSCF) launched the Stem Cell Charter, a global declaration of support for a body of science that could “revolutionize the practice of medicine, develop treatments for diseases, and create unprecedented hope for humanity.” The Charter sets out five principles for stem cell research: responsible science, protection of citizens, intellectual freedom, transparency, and integrity.
So far, the list of conditions that could respond to stem cell treatment includes multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, blindness, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, arthritis, diabetes, spinal cord injuries, and liver disease. So if you or anyone you know is at risk for any of those diseases, this charter is for you.
“We all have a vested interest in finding cures and moving them to the clinic,” said James Price, the Foundation’s president and CEO, during the Charter launch September 22.
From noon Thursday through noon Saturday, November 12−14, the Foundation ran an online rally, designed to draw new awareness and new signatories to the Charter. If you’re reading this after Saturday noon, though, don’t worry: the Charter will continue building momentum for weeks to come, and organizers are counting on all of us to help make it a success.
It turns out that the launch of the Charter does carry a back story of interest to meetings and events. The Stem Cell Foundation’s understanding of meeting formats and strategy makes it a great case study for any planner or supplier who’s still trying to find the right balance between onsite and online programs. But the takeaway from this blog post is more immediate and direct:
Sign the Charter. Sign it today. And take a moment to pass the message to your friends, family, and colleagues.
