Fond farewell
By Adam Hardiman | January 29, 2009
The Conference Publishers is the best place I’ve ever worked. That’s exactly why I’m moving on.
This office has stiff competition when it comes to treating its employees well. As a former employee of a company that won the Globe & Mail “Best Small & Medium Sized Employer in Canada” award, I’m fortunate to know what’s it like to work where the management cares as much about you as they do about what you can do for their profit margin.
That former company is great, but The Conference Publishers is better every day of the week and twice on Sunday (a day on which you would never have to work, by the way).
Much of it has to with the definition of greatness around here. The Conference Publishers strives to be a great company instead of a big one; excellence is more important than growth.
It’s been an honour to work with such talented, tireless, and compassionate professionals. All of them are unique personalities who bring something different to the table, a roundtable where office politics are nonexistent and discussions of worldly matters are openly debated—sometimes at length.
Best idea wins at The Conference Publishers. While everyone has personal biases, there are no workplace agendas that push the best way forward to the sidelines. There’s no gossip around the invisible watercooler, partly because drinking tap water is better for the environment, but mostly because the consumption of coffee has been elevated to spiritual status at 858 Bank Street.
I could go on about the virtues of this place, so I’ll stop now and save you the over-the-top routine. In a final, last-ditch, borderline shameless plug, I will ask you to visit the company website at www.theconferencepublishers.com.
Simply put: This company cares deeply about its family of contributors and even more so about the world we inhabit.
That’s why I have to say goodbye. I can no longer sit on the bench and watch my teammates around the world fight the good fight without lifting a hand myself. I need to work beyond the windows of this office, so that someone will always have this office to come back to.
If the recent presidential election in the U.S. has taught us anything, it’s that a group of committed individuals really can change the world for the better (or at the very least, take a huge step in the right direction).
In the words of Will.I.Am, it’s a new day. I’m in.

Adam, this post sums up why it’s been such a brilliant, shining privilege to have you as part of our team. I know you’ll continue to do great things, whatever’s next…and I’m glad that that “whatever” will include freelance assignments on our onsite writing teams.
