Comings, Goings, and a Long Overdue Introduction
By Mitchell Beer | May 21, 2009
We have a couple of staff changes to report at The Conference Publishers, as well as a long overdue introduction for someone who’s an unsung but integral part of our team.
At the end of this month, Project Manager Kate McAteer begins her maternity leave. She’s expecting her first child at the end of June. We’re all looking forward to meeting the newest member of the company’s extended family, and to welcoming Kate back to the office in several months.
On her way out the door, Kate will have just enough time to join us in greeting Adam Hardiman when he rejoins our permanent staff. You might recall the blog post Adam wrote in January, when he announced he was leaving our account management team. It was a happy surprise—and a bit of a happy coincidence—when we found out that he was willing to return as a project manager. Initially, Adam will take over Kate’s duties. By the time she’s back at work, we expect our project management office will be ready to add a fourth permanent position.
And finally…regular readers of The Edge may have noticed the periodic comments we receive from Reuben Brasloff. For those of you who don’t know him, Reub is my dad, and I consistently get a kick out of the humour and historical depth he brings to the blog.
Reuben came into my life when I was in my late teens, just in time to model the interest in sound science and commitment to reliable, substantive knowledge that shaped my early work as a journalist, then became key operating principles for our conference content service. He’s also one of the few people I know who take genuine delight in a long series of shameless, rapidly degenerating puns. (To this day, he usually gets the last word.)
Every time this firm does something very well, some part of our success can be traced back to Reuben’s early guidance. So I’m thrilled that he’s chosen to introduce himself to our wider community through this blog.

Mitchell’s introduction about me brings to mind the first time I was called on to present a world renowned guest speaker to a large audience. Five minutes before the meeting was scheduled to start I was given the celebrity’s CV. Its contents would have taken me almost as much time to read as was allotted for the speaker himself.
“Keep it down to three minutes” cautioned the meeting chairman. So I gulped and mumbled random phrases from the CV and then to point the guest who, still seated, said “Do you mean me?”
This is my reaction to Mitchell’s introduction about me. Thanks, son.

It’s nice to see that you have such a great mutual admiration society working relationship! (My mother and I are punsters, too!)
